Fire & Form: A Raku Day at the Takaezu Studio

This is a rare full-day experience designed for ceramic artists and serious enthusiasts — part pilgrimage, part workshop.

We'll begin the morning at the Princeton University Art Museum for a guided tour of the Toshiko Takaezu exhibition, exploring the work of one of the most influential ceramic artists of the 20th century. From there, we carpool (~30 min) to the Takaezu Studio in Quakertown, New Jersey for an afternoon of hands-on Raku firing led by Brooke Auchincloss.

Participants will actively contribute to the firing process — loading, tending, and reducing — not just watching. Nicholas will be on hand throughout to assist Brooke and support participants at every stage. Lunch is provided: local pizza, salads, and beverages.

What to bring: Participants should arrive with 2–3 bisqued ceramic pieces. The ideal form is tall and narrow — approximately 3" diameter × 9"+ height — made from a groggy mid-to-high fire clay body. We'll work together on glazing before the firing day so your pieces are ready to go.

What to expect: Raku firing is an outdoor, atmospheric process involving fire, heat, and reduction smoke. Dress for it — your clothes will likely pick up some smoky scent. What comes out of the kiln is one-of-a-kind: unpredictable, immediate, and worth every bit of the process.

Rate: $265 per person Includes lunch. Transportation not included — Nicholas will organize NYC carpooling for the trip to Princeton.

Group is limited to 8–10 participants.

Brooklyn Ceramic Arts Tour

Click here for the full list of events

Since 2021, 15 new ceramics studios and clay spaces have opened across Brooklyn, reflecting a larger cultural desire to step away from technology overload and reconnect with hobbies that let people make things with their hands, focus, and find community. The Brooklyn Ceramic Arts Tour (BCAT), founded by Brooklyn artists, Jill Bell and co-organizer Nic Newcomb, is now entering its 4th year, and we see this shift as a big part of why the tour continues to resonate so deeply.

Taking place May 28–31, BCAT is a free four-day, self-guided tour celebrating Brooklyn’s diverse and rapidly growing ceramic arts scene. This year, 300+ artists, studios, and local businesses will open their doors for exhibitions, demonstrations, artist talks, pottery sales, studio tours, and more, all organized around themes of education, production, fine art, functional art, craftsmanship, and innovation.

At its core, BCAT exists to help Brooklyn’s clay community work as a collective: to inspire, support, and learn from one another while welcoming the public into that process.

Highlights this year include:

  • 100+ artist pottery fair at the Old Stone House

  • live demonstrations

  • best studio pet competition

  • panel discussion on sustainability

  •  a throwing competition

  • outside raku firings

  • numerous free exhibitions, artist talks, and studio tours throughout the borough

Studio Get-Together Potluck

Katie Coughlin opened Ovington Pottery in 2025, fulfilling her dream of creating a small, welcoming clay community in the heart of Bay Ridge. Tucked away in a third-floor walk-up, the studio is filled with natural light and birdsong. Katie’s family has lived in the building for decades, and she built Ovington Pottery’s classrooms in what were once her grandparents’ living and dining rooms.

Katie will share more about Ovington’s mission and what it’s been like building a ceramic practice and shared studio space inside a New York brownstone.

Bring food and drinks to share—we can’t wait to see everyone there!
